 Preparation for Munich
The eyes of the world footballers are turning toward Mexico, the host country of the World Cup 1970, this year, but the Japanese are looking for the way to Munich where the XXth Olympic Games will be held in 1972. Immediately after the disqualification at the Seoul tournament for the World Cup, the coaching staffs of the national team decided the plan of there construction under the chairmanship of Mr. Ken Naganuma, who was the manager of the Olympic team in Mexico 1968, where the Japanese won the bronze medals.
The plan consists of three points. The first point is to build up a new national team for Munich Olympics. As the steps to Munich, they will compete in the Merdeka tournament in Malaysia and the sixth Asian Games in Bangkok this year. Japan has not yet won any Asian title of football and so they want to get the titles this time playing with its strongest “A”team.
The second point is to find the talented young players for the national team. Two kinds of junior team will be formed ?this year. One is composed of the player of the League clubs and the other of the students of the university teams. In Japan, more than half of the young footballers belong to the university clubs. Matches of these two junior teams asn the national team shall take place for the sake of convenience to find the young talents. Then a national junior team shall be formed and make a tour to Europe next summer.
The third point is to train the young players. Japan Football Association has appointed Mr. Teruyuki Matsuda to take charge of the youth team and is going to engage in a contract with him as a Association’s coach. Mr.Matsuda had been an unknown high school teacher in Hiroshima until the last summer when FIFA coaching school was held in Kemigawa near Tokyo. He participated in the school and was found by Mr. Dettmar Cramer, the FIFA instructor.
